LAURENS COUNTY, GA (CNN): The plan was this: The sheriff would drive to the property to execute the search warrant for particular objects generally associated with dogfighting, and for the dogs themselves.

Expressing concerns about the conditions at this private residence where dogs were suspected of being bred for dogfighting, Laurens County Sheriff Bill Harrell said, “If anything is going wrong, we want to get it stopped.”

Private investigators with Norred and Associates Inc. will work alongside Harrell and his deputies, leading tactical teams. The teams were made up of veteran investigators donating their time, effort and expertise, along with volunteers of the Dublin-Laurens County Humane Society, who would collect and care for the dogs. Private security firm helps bust alleged dogfighter

BLUE RIDGE, GA: There’s been considerable attention paid to the role played by private security firms in the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. As it turns out, one such firm is also helping with the stateside war against dogfighting.

Earlier this month, the Appalachian Circuit District Attorney’s office raided Mountain Swamp Kennels in rural Blue Ridge, Ga., near the border with North Carolina. Owner Albert Glenn White was arrested and charged with more than 20 counts of felony dogfighting. Authorities say they found three fighting pits on the property and dogfighting paraphernalia and seized 22 dogs, some of whom reportedly have scars consistent with fighting. Read more…

Case Update – 11 adult dogs and 5 puppies seized

Chuck Simmons could see the dogs through his binoculars. They didn’t look healthy. He saw people going in and out of the South Gordon Road property in Austell. And he heard the roar of the ATV engines, a telltale sign to the veteran law enforcement officer. Dogs can be tied to the back of all-terrain vehicles and forced to run behind them, Simmons said. It builds stamina in fighting dogs.

Simmons, who was acting on an anonymous tip, took his findings to investigators in Cobb. The dogs -11 adults and five puppies- were seized this week by members of the Marietta-Cobb-Smyrna Organized Crime Intelligence Unit, Cobb police and animal control officers. Two men, Michael Sweeney, 45, and Erik Vann, 28, have been charged with 16 felony counts of dog fighting. Read more…

Dog-fighting – 11 adult dogs and 5 puppies seized

AUSTELL, GA: The 16 pit bulls were tethered with logging chains. Attached to each dog’s collar were two 5-pound weights to help them build neck and leg strength for fighting. They had no bedding, even when outside temperatures dropped below freezing. They had plenty of wounds. But no food.

The 11 adults and five puppies were malnourished and underweight when police raided the 5-acre dog-fighting training center on South Gordon Road in Austell on Monday. Michael E. Sweeney, 45, and Erik M. Vann, 28, both of Austell, were each charged with 16 counts of animal cruelty and dog fighting, a felony in Georgia, police said. The information about the dogs and the conditions is outlined in arrest warrants. Read more…
